Fall/Winter 2011 Fashion Trend: The Fade Effect

The last few weeks of the winter season can be excruciating…who wants to make the effort to dress up, only to go out side and tackle the cold weather, heavy winds, ice rain and black slush? Staying in and browsing through fashion week photos to spot trends is so much more favourable.

The fade effect is a subtle style that many designers portrayed in their collections at fashion weeks in New York, Paris and London, by using dark shades to fade into light hues, resulting in an overall tie-dye appearance.

In New York, this style was shown simply in both a long, flowing gown and a calf-length dress that appeared on the runway, while in Paris it was embellished with texture.

In London, Lela Rose used the technique to give character to a fur jacket, while other designers combined the fade effect with printed fabrics.

Fall/Winter 2011 Colour Trend: Purple

Colour trends for Fall/Winter 2011 look bright and vibrant. Though some designers stuck to monochrome palettes and prints, many experimented with shades of purple.

Malandrino, Halston and Badgley Mischka at NYFW

In New York, designers draped purple fabrics to create stunning evening wear. Malandrino used a darker shade to embody mystery and sophistication, while the indigo Halston dress gives off a whimsical, toga effect. Badgley Mischka combined shades of red, pink and purple in their flowing gown.

Alberta Ferretti, Versace and Blumarine at MFW

Alberta Ferretti and Blumarine incorporated the bright purple shade of purple reminiscent of Daphne from The “Scooby Doo” cartoon series, while Versace’s single-strap dress is accompanied by purple accessories.

YSL, Balenciaga and Rue du Mail at PFW

In Paris, Yves Saint Laurent and Rue Du Mail used a bold purple shade in outerwear variations, and Balenciaga sent a pair of bright purple pants down the runway.

Rihanna’s Grammy dress foreshadows a Fall trend

Rihanna in Jean Paul Gaultier at the 2011 Grammy Awards

Rihanna wore this white Jean Paul Gaultier dress to the 2011 Grammy Awards. Though some thought the outfit was a hit and some disregarded it as a miss, there was a general consensus that it was a unique but crazy one-off look. Then, at NYFW, designer Norma Kamali displayed a dress with a similar, but not so blatant concept:

But then came fashion weeks in  Europe, and the see-through stripes style dress was seen again on the runway…and again…and again… until it could no longer be dismissed as a one-time risk taken by Rihanna.

Fashion East, Giles and Jean Pierre Braganza at LFW

At LFW, designers used different fabrics and styles that emulated Rihanna’s Grammy look. The sheer maxi, leather dress and baggy top all use the same transparent-solid stripe method.

Pedro Lourenco, Vionnet, Commuun and Emanuel Ungaro at PFW

In Paris, Pedro Lourenco used black fur while Vionnet displayed the look in a baby blue colour, and Norma Kamalli showcased a more casual and conservative take on the style in New York.  Commuun opted for a monochrome style of the dress, and Emanuel Ungaro went metallic and flashy with his design.

It looks like what appeared to be an avant-garde red carpet look at first, may come to be a bona fide trend this Fall season!

Fall/Winter 2011 Trend: Luxurious Leather

Designers at Fashion Weeks ditched the traditional leather jacket and replaced it with slinky dresses and full skirts made from leather (and patent leather).

Kevork Kiledjian, Cynthia Steffe and Christian Siriano and NYFW

Kevork Kiledjian used the lace that he incorporated into many of his other designs, to create panels in this leather dress. Cynthia Steffe layered  the fabric to create a wrap effect, and Project Runway winner Christian Siriano made an impact with this full leather skirt.

Fashion East, Giles and Osman at LFW

Fashion East put forth this leather shirt dress on the runway, while Giles opted for a catwoman-esque look, and Osman for a simple sleeveless dress.

Versace, MaxMara and Trussardi at MFW

The Versace collection included this punky jacket-dress with red buttons and a pleated skirt. MaxMara designed a simple leather top with a belt, and Trussardi created a cinch-like effect with the fabric in place of a waist belt.

Junya Watanabe, Lanvin and Loewe at PFW

Junya Watanabe’s leather dress with zippers has a futuristic look to it, whereas Lanvin and Loewe opted for city-girl looks with their pieces.

Fall/Winter 2011 Colour Trend: Red-Orange

With Fashion Weeks in Europe drawing to a close, a few colour trends stood out amongst the various collections. The Crayola shade of red-orange for instance, was used by designers in New York, London, Milan and Paris.

Carlos Miele, Proenza Schouler and Reed Krakoff in New York

Carlos Miele’s gathered jumpsuit will be a popular garment this fall season. Many neutral-coloured oversized blazers were spotted on the runways, but this Proenza Schueler piece is funky and eye-catching. And although black sheer dresses were a plenty amongst the New York collections, these sheer red-orange sleeves by Reed Krakoff give a fresh and cheery look to the trend.

Matthew Williamson, Issa and Betty Jackson in London

Matthew Williamson shows that red-orange pants can be edgy, and Issa gave grace and sophistication to this bright dress from his collection. Though Feretti’s outfit could have looked like a prison jumpsuit, the model carries it with a whimsical attitude.

Gabriele Colangelo, Blumarine and Alberta Feretti in Milan

Designers in Milan showed that red-orange outerwear will definitely be trendy this Fall, and Blumarine used cut-out lace in the same colour for a spin-off of the sheer lace dress.

Lanvin, Sonia Rykiel and Rue du Mail in Paris

Lanvin impressed viewers with dresses that incorporated movement and body, while Sonia Rykiel included red-orange stirrup leggings in her runway show, and Rue du Mail mixed Halloween colours in his red-orange piece.

Virginity: a new trend?

More youth in the US are opting to stay virgins

The vintage clothing trend has been dominating the global fashion scene for a while now…but it looks like vintage is influencing more than just fashion. Data released Thursday, revealed that for the first time there is an increase in the number of teenagers and young adults deciding to wait longer to have sex.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Health Statistics study revealed that from 2006-2008, 29 per cent of females and 27 per cent of males between the ages of 15 and 24 reported that they were still virgins. In 2002, only 22 per cent of males and females could say the same. According to the study, these numbers account for all means of sexual activity, not just intercourse. Though the results reflect responses from Americans, newspapers in Canada like The Globe and Mail and the Toronto Sun reported the story shortly after the results were publicized.

These results may be the outcome of the  amped up its sex education programs in schools in the US. Or, pro-abstinence groups are now reaching a wider audience with their message. It could even mean that the youth of today are striving to follow the ideals of a more traditional era. Though this may be a significant step in the society of American youth, we have yet to see if the courtship dating system or petticoats paired with corsets will make a comeback too.
