Jumpsuit of the Day: Temperley London at London Fashion Week

Temperley London collection shown at London Fashion Week

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Temperley London brand, and to celebrate, designer Alice Temperley staged her Fall/Winter 2011 Ready-to-Wear runway show at the British Museum in London– a fashion week first! Models strutted their glamorous garments down the runway, and then struck statue-like poses at one side of the grand staircase. For her colour palette, Temperley combined harsh blacks and browns with soft neutral shades of white, and a few touches of red.  Fabrics were sheer, lace and silk, with a variety of textures and treatments.

Temperley combines a retro design with a bold, glittering gold and brown print to create this jumpsuit, suitable for both evening-wear and perhaps a night out at a lavish lounge. In many ways, the cut of this garment is very similar to a Topshop Unique design shown the same day in London.

Jumpsuit of the Day: Akris at Paris Fashion Week

Akris jumpsuits at Paris Fashion Week

Designer Albert Kriemler showcased the brand’s Fall/Winter 2011 Ready-to-Wear collection on March 6th at Paris Fashion Week. The Akris clothing company was founded in 1922, and started out making only simple kitchen aprons. It is now the largest Swiss clothing producer in the world. Kriemler used a variety of both rich and subdued shades in his fall colour palette. Golds, browns, blacks and maroons were used in conjunction with soft greys and creams.

These two jumpsuits are very similar, and were part of the PFW collection. Both have halter necks, however one is a turtleneck halter and is a cream colour, while the other is more grey. Though this is a Fall/Winter collection, these jumpsuits are perfect garments for one’s spring/summer wardrobe. The loose-fitting material falls beautifully, creating an effortlessly elegant overall look. The belts give shape to the garments, hinting at the feminine figure, and can be worn at the hips, or at the waist.

Jumpsuit of the Day: Topshop Unique at London Fashion Week

Topshop Unique F/W 2011 RTW at London Fashion Week

At the Topshop Unique Fall/Winter 2011 Ready-to-Wear runway show last month at London Fashion Week, Dalmatian-printed garments were spotted on the runway, including this steel-grey jumpsuit. The collection also featured a variety of other funky prints paired with various colours and textures.

This deep maroon jumpsuit gives off a quirky and youthful vibe, with its sleeveless top with a plunging V-neck, combined with a wide sash-like belt draped over her hips and knotted at the naval. The fabric appears to be a crepe-silk, and in movement, its diamond print shows hints of orange and purple shades. The free-spirited fashionista wearing this jumpsuit can definitely expect to turn heads for having a borderline diva-esque dress-sense.

Jumpsuit of the Day: Jean-Pierre Braganza at London Fashion Week

Futuristic F/W 2011 jumpsuit by designer Jean Pierre Braganza

Oversized collars, eye-catching colours, bold prints and metallic fabrics gave a futuristic feel to Jean Pierre Braganza’s Fall/Winter 2011 Ready-to-Wear runway show that took place on February 18th at London Fashion Week. Jean-Pierre Braganza was born in London to an Irish father and Asian mother. He moved to Canada at a young age where he completed a fine arts degree,  before moving back to London and starting his own label in 2003.

This jumpsuit definitely speaks to his futuristic design aesthetic. The bold lines, vibrant red, high collar give it some bold drama, which is softened by the light fabric and loose-fitting–giving a somewhat sporty, yet urban-chic appearance.

Fall/Winter 2011 Fashion Trend: Skirts with Fringes & Feathers

With the close of fashion weeks for the Fall/Winter 2011 season, the time for trend forecasting is complete, and runway analysis is well underway. While leather, velvet and colour-fading fabrics have been declared as trendy materials this coming fall season, it looks like fringes and feathers will be the “it” embellishments. Designers in New York, London, Milan and Paris created gorgeous gowns and dresses with fringed and feathered skirts.

Cushnie et Ochs, Lela Rose and Oscar de la Renta at NYFW

Cushnie et Ochs and Oscar de la Renta used black feathers to give full-bodied skirts to their pieces in New York, while Lela Rose combined grey feathers with sheer fabric to spruce up a white draped top.

Holly Fulton (LFW), Aquilano.Rimondi (MFW) and No.21 (MFW)

In London and Milan, designers opted for cream-coloured feathers and fringing. Aquilano.Rimondi and No.21 gave their pieces dropped waists, while Holly Fulton’s sits slightly higher.

Hakaan, Alexander McQueen and Barbara Bui at PFW

In Paris, designers used dark feathers and fringes to give their outfits attitude and edginess. Hakaan used navy blue to create a micro-mini fringed skirt, while Alexander McQueen arranged feathers to form an A-line shape.  Barbara Bui on the other hand, gave a metallic look to this outfit by combining a short fringed skirt with a leather waistband.

Whether girly and flirty, or edgy and sexy, it’s no doubt that feathers and fringes add volume and character to ordinary skirts and dresses– expect to see plenty of plumage embellishments on party dresses for the rest of 2011!

Jumpsuit of the Day: Alexandre Herchcovitch at NY Fashion Week

Alexandre Herchcovitch jumpsuit in New York's F/W 2011 RTW fashion show

Alexandre Herchcovitch showed his Fall/Winter 2011 Ready-to-Wear collection at New York Fashion Week last month. His clothes were bold and gothic, with an overall theme of what appeared to be ‘band diva meets female military officer, meets grunge glamour.’  Blacks, browns and army shades made up the colour palette, along with some bright yellow. His dresses were tent-shaped with stiff sleeves, and embellished with lace cutouts and trimmings.

It’s hard to imagine this jumpsuit on today’s average working woman– she would have to be a real fashion risk-taker. Nonetheless, the garment is not one to be written off as avant-garde Gaga clown piece. The puffy shoulders and unique side pleating make it a jumpsuit worthy of any daring city slicker with a macabre sense of style.

Fall/Winter 2011 Fashion Trend: Velvet Pants

Designers at fashion weeks last month showcased their Ready-to-Wear collections for the Fall/Winter 2011-2012 seasons. While some covered their models in bright colours and luxurious leathers, others opted for a less vibrant look– velvet.

As usual, designers brought forth an expected dosage of velvet tops and dresses…but they didn’t stop there. Audience saw tapered trousers, harem pants and the signature F/W 2011 bell-bottoms make countless appearances in velvet– a somewhat unconventional fabric for pants. Nonetheless, it added luxury, comfort and style to a great number of fashion week outfits.

Kelly Wearstler (NYFW), Marc by Marc Jacobs (NYFW), Emporio Armani (MFW) and Georgio Armani (MFW)

In New York, designer Kelly Wearstler gave velvet a unique, preppy spin by pairing pants with a blazer and Converse high-tops. Marc Jacobs on the other hand, created a velvet suit outfit, for the working woman who is also a fan of the vintage look. In Milan, Emporio and Georgio Armani stayed chic and stylish with their velvet ensembles.

Emanuel Ungaro, Haider Ackermann, Nina Ricci and Givenchy at PFW

In Paris, designers showed velvet pants in shades of sapphire blue, burnt red, dark teal and army green, in every style from high-waisted bell-bottoms to slim-fitting riding pants.

It can be certain that this coming fall season, celebs will be experimenting with velvet pants that may lay outside of their comfort zone of Juicy Couture velour!

Jumpsuit of the Day: St. John at NY Fashion Week

Jumpsuit by St. John at New York Fashion Week

The St. John Fall/Winter 2011 Ready-to-Wear collection was shown at New York Fashion Week early last month. Creative director George Sharp illustrated dramatic elegance in designing the garments–Fur accents, calf-length dresses, tailored bell-bottoms and flowy maxi skirts, embellished with belts, bows and striking costume jewelry.

This lavish maroon colour of this jumpsuit makes it a perfect outfit for the holiday season. Nothing says “trendy” more clearly than the signature NYFW F/W 2011 flared pants, but combined with the dolman sleeves, there’s just too disproportional much volume– it probably should have been an either-or design decision.

Fall/Winter 2011 Fashion Trend: The Fade Effect

The last few weeks of the winter season can be excruciating…who wants to make the effort to dress up, only to go out side and tackle the cold weather, heavy winds, ice rain and black slush? Staying in and browsing through fashion week photos to spot trends is so much more favourable.

The fade effect is a subtle style that many designers portrayed in their collections at fashion weeks in New York, Paris and London, by using dark shades to fade into light hues, resulting in an overall tie-dye appearance.

Lela Rose (NYFW), L'Wren Scott (NYFW) and Sharon Wauchob (PFW)

In New York, this style was shown simply in both a long, flowing gown and a calf-length dress that appeared on the runway, while in Paris it was embellished with texture.

Matthew Williamson, Clements Ribeiro and Kinder Aggugini at LFW

In London, Lela Rose used the technique to give character to a fur jacket, while other designers combined the fade effect with printed fabrics.

Stay tuned for more Fall/Winter 2011 fashion trends!
