Jumpsuit of the Day: Central Saint Martins at London Fashion Week

Viktor Smedinge for Central Saint Martins at LFW

Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design is a cutting edge school based in London, England. Each February, the creme de la creme of the fashion program’s graduating class show off their work at Fashion Week and last month, the class of 2011 sent a collection comprised of 204 looks down the runway at London Fashion Week.

Designer Viktor Smedinge graduated from Central Saint Martins in 2009 with a BA, and he returned for his MA. His ten runway looks appeared to be inspired by the aces and spades in a deck of cards, and his colour palette consisted only of black and cream. This jumpsuit illustrates his creativity and tailoring expertise. The scroll-like folds of fabrics growing out of the suit’s hips and the sleeves resembling a football player’s padding however, almost take the garment from artistic to avante-garde…much like an outfit that aspires to be Gaga, but isn’t quite over-the-top enough.

Jumpsuit of the Day: Emporio Armani at Milan Fashion Week

Emporio Armani F/W 2011 RTW at Milan Fashion Week

Armani showed his Fall/Winter 2011 Ready-to-Wear collection at Milan Fashion Week on Saturday. Blacks and greys dominated the runway, with a few pops of electric blue. The chiffons, silks, velvets and sequined embellishments accompanying the classic workwear materials showed the sheer versatility of the brand, in addition to its unwavering skill to incorporate glamour into the wardrobe of the working woman.

In each of  these two jumpsuits, Armani created a single ruffle, and attached it to the garment. On the first piece, the ruffle is made to look like a collar, and on the second it’s attached to the hip in a fish fin-like way. The ruffles act as the main feature of each jumpsuit; they are bold and overbearing, and what the eye is first drawn to.

Jumpsuit of the Day: Brooklyn Decker decked out in Berlin

Brooklyn Decker in Berlin, Germany

Brooklyn Decker stars alongside Adam Sandler, Jennifer Aniston and Nicole Kidman in Just Go With It– a romantic comedy released in theatres earlier this month. Last Monday, at the film’s premiere in Berlin, Germany, Decker arrived in this purple silk jumpsuit, slightly upstaging her fellow cast members. Aniston on the other hand opted for an LBD…but with ruffles, frills, a lace cutout and asymmetrical sleeves it was far from drab.

Decker’s jumpsuit was designed by MaxMara. Heres’ how it looked on the runway at his Spring/Summer 2011 RTW fashion show in September at Milan Fashion Week:

Jumpsuit of the Day: Charles Anastase at London Fashion Week

Charles Anastase's Fall/Winter 2011 collection at LFW

Charles Anastase showed the world his Fall/Winter 2011 Ready-to-Wear collection at London Fashion Week on Saturday. A variety of colours and textures were sent down the runway, so diverse that it was hard to pinpoint a single look or theme; but at best, it could be described as schoolgirl meets Lolita meets country-girl couture.

These two jumpsuits from his runway show share the same cut:  flared bell-bottom pants, long, fitted sleeves and peter pan collars. The first gives off a futuristic vibe. It appears to be made from crepe or silk, and the dull but shiny blue colour allows one to classify it as evening-wear. The burnt red corduroy piece has more of a country (maybe just because the colour is reminiscent of a typical barn!) look,  however seems more wearable as day-wear… but with the right accessories it too can be worn at night.

Jumpsuit of the Day: 3.1 Phillip Lim at NY Fashion Week

3.1 Phillip Lim Fall 2011 RTW collection

Designer Phillip Lim showed these two  jumpsuits with his Fall/Winter 2011 Ready-to-Wear collection last Wednesday at New York Fashion Week. His colour palette consisted of bright blues, lime greens and subdued neutrals, with some touches of burnt red. He drew his inspiration from the concept of fashion on two wheels. “It’s about these chic women who ride bikes to work, to brunch, to a cocktail party,” said Lim.

What makes these jumpsuits unique is the pleating that starts at the naval, and continues down the front of each leg, making the overall look appear suitable for the office. With the right accessories, these outfits can even be taken from day to night, especially the blue piece!

Jumpsuit of the Day: Rebecca Minkoff at NY Fashion Week

Rebecca Minkoff Fall/Winter 2011 RTW Collection

It looks like the silk jumpsuit is on its way to becoming an evening-wear trend this Fall/Winter, and as hot as the cheetah-print trend has been this season, newsflash for its haters– it’s here to stay for at least another season.

In design, this piece is similar to jumpsuits from the Carlos Miele collection, shown at New York on Valentines Day. The tapered pant and wrap neck give the silk garment some edge and sophistication, and the three-quarter-length sleeve shows just the right amount of wrist. The outfit is completed by a leather black belt, black wedges and a studded black clutch.

Jumpsuit of the Day: Michael Kors at NY Fashion Week

Jumpsuits by Michael Kors at NYFW Fall 2011

In this clever design, Michael Kors avoided the dreaded tight jumpsuit crotch and produced a casual and comfortable, yet fun and fashion-forward garment.

The dropped crotch flatters the models’ hip curves, and doesn’t give the fabric awkward or vulgar-looking creases in the pelvic-thigh area. The material appears to be cotton jersey, explaining the perfect fall of the fabric, and the combination of the scoop neck and wide-leg pants of the garment gives a sexy but relaxed look to what could have been a drab and unflattering outfit.

Jumpsuit of the Day: Gwen Stefani for L.A.M.B. at NY Fashion Week

Gwen Stefani in L.A.M.B. at NYFW

Gwen Stefani’s L.A.M.B. Fall 2011 Ready-to-Wear collection was one of the last to be shown at New York Fashion Week. After the models strutted down the runway, Stefani graced the audience with her presence dressed in this cheetah-print jumpsuit.

The flowy material, and the manner in which it’s draped over one shoulder gives a sari effect to the outfit, which is held in place by a black leather belt. The bold colours across a white fabric gives an edgy vibe to the cheetah look; a print that is bold in itself (and clearly a print that will remain trendy  throughout fall; a number of designers at NYFW and even LFW fell back on the print for their garments).

Jumpsuit of the Day: Max Azria at NY Fashion Week

Max Azria Fall 2011 RTW

Browns, blacks and greys dominated the runways at Max Azria’s Fall 2011 Ready-to-Wear runway show last week at NYFW. Although Max Azria is the founder of noted women’s fashion brand BCBG, this outfit is anything but bon chic bon genre. Frankly speaking, it’s difficult to understand why any woman with good style or attitude would wake up in the morning and dress herself in a jumpsuit that makes her look like a school janitor.

The baggy pants, long sleeves and drawstring waist make the model look like she’s ready to take out the trash. Worse, the two flat pockets appear as if they were slapped onto her chest at  the last minute. Her slicked back hair only completes the overall grotesque image. The button-lined chinese-style collar are about the only parts of the jumpsuit that carry some style.

Jumpsuit of the Day: Kevork Kiledjian at NY Fashion Week

Kevork Kiledjian Fall 2011 RTW

Kevork Kiledjian’s Fall 2011 Ready-to-Wear runway show took place on Valentines Day last week. Using leather, metallic shimmer, sequins, glitter and fringe detailing, Kiledjian gave a glamorous touch to the biker babe look. His clothes target a younger audience, and after watching models strut his sultry short dresses with unique necklines down the runway, there’s no doubting his eye for design. After all, his mother was connected to the field of architecture, and his father was a couturier for Lanvin!

This form-fitting bodysuit has a cheetah print, but its figure hugging appearance makes it look more like a funky lace. The outfit is styled perfectly with a cream coloured matrix-inspired coat and a chunky statement necklace.
